Interdiction on asbestos

For purpose of protecting the health of the population and the environment, starting January the 1st 2007, all activities related to the sale and use of asbestos and products containing asbestos are interdicted. Manufacturers and importers of asbestos-containing products thus are obligated to find a way to replace these. These provisions are specified in GD 124/2003 regarding the prevention, reduction and control of environment pollution with asbestos. Exceptions from these rule are only diaphragms containing white asbestos, uses for electrolysis installations, which may be used only by the end of their life duration, but no later than January the 1st 2008. According to the Monitoring, Synthesis and Coordination Service, at this time, a database is being prepared at the national level with economic agents using asbestos in their activity. (S.G.)
